In computer networking, a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier assigned to most network adapters or network interface cards (NICs) by the manufacturer for identification, and used in the Media Access Control protocol sub-layer. If assigned by the manufacturer, a MAC address usually encodes the manufacturer's registered identification number. It may also be known as an Ethernet Hardware Address (EHA), hardware address, adapter address, or physical address.

There are three numbering spaces, managed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which are in common use for formulating a MAC address: MAC-48, EUI-48, and EUI-64. The IEEE claims trademarks on the names "EUI-48" and "EUI-64", where "EUI" stands for Extended Unique Identifier.

Although intended to be a permanent and globally unique identification, it is possible to change the MAC address on most of today's hardware, an action often referred to as MAC spoofing. Unlike IP address spoofing, where a sender spoofing their address in a request tricks the other party into sending the response elsewhere, in MAC address spoofing, the response is received by the spoofing party. However, MAC address spoofing is limited to the local broadcast domain.

A host cannot determine from the MAC address of another host whether that host is on the same OSI Layer 2 network segment as the sending host, or on a network segment bridged to that network segment.

In TCP/IP networks, the MAC address of a subnet interface can be queried with the IP address using the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) for Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) or the Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) for IPv6. On broadcast networks, such as Ethernet, the MAC address uniquely identifies each node on that segment and allows frames to be marked for specific hosts. It thus forms the basis of most of the Link layer (OSI Layer 2) networking upon which upper layer protocols rely to produce complex, functioning networks.

Mac Address?
Q. Does anyone know what a MAC address for a computer is? How do I know my pc's Mac address? How do I know somebody's Mac address? Thanks

A. To add - each vendor has a range of address space it uses to identify it (the manufacturer) and basically a serial number as each MAC address is supposed to be unique. To identify another mac address you would do an ARP with the IP address of the destination you would like to identify. Doing an ARP (address resolution protocol) doesn't necessarily mean you will get a response since doing such is another mechanism hackers use, i.e. security may block such requests..

How do you find your PSP MAC Address without going into the System Settings?
Q. I think the installation of 3.52 M33 might have damaged or changed my MAC because that's about when my WiFi card went dead. It still reads the memory stick and the headphone jack still works but I can't use any wireless features (game sharing, internet browser, photo sharing) so I think the problem might be the MAC. Problem is that I don't know what my MAC Address was to begin with. Thanks for your help.

How do I enter my mac address in my Playstation 3?
Q. I just got it and I cant enter the internet because it doesnt know my mac address.

A. You don't have to enter in the MAC address anywhere. The MAC address is a 12 character hexadecimal number that makes every connection device (ethernet address, wireless chip, etc.) unique. The router can use this information to allow/restrict access, but normally you don't have to do anything with it since the routers are default to allow all MAC addresses access. If you're trying to use wireless connectivity, you need the SSID and the encryption code (I recomend using WEP-type encryption). If you're using Ethernet, you just need to plug in the cable into PS3 and router and it should be good to go.
