What do you do with mail that keeps coming to your apartment addressed to the previous occupants?
Q. What do you do with mail that keeps coming to your apartment addressed to the previous occupants? I think they filled out that mail forwarding crap, but I keep getting stuff. Is there a way to tell the post office that those people don't live here any more? What does the USPS reccomend?
Asked by W(aL)D - Wed Jun 14 22:45:20 2006 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should not open it and you should not destroy it either as this is a federal offense. The USPS suggest you mark the envelope "Not at this address" and place it back in a mail collection box.

How to write a letter addressed to the court?
Q. I am a victim in a sex offense case. I am allowed to address the court during sensitizing but would prefer to write a letter so I don't have to speak directly. How do I go about writing a letter addressed to the court and the judge. This letter will be read out loud by my victim advocate.

A. Address the letter to the: Honorable Judge___ Your honor I stand before you the victim of a sexual assault, please consider this statement as my plea to you for every possible sanction permitted by law, this individual did on (give date) physically and sexually assault my person, (give as many details as you are comfortable with and plead for a strict sentence) the letter does not need to be a long one as the judge sat through the trial and in most cases has already decided the sentence he/she will give. Keep in mind judges are people to and you should not fear addressing them.!~!

Q. "How have various cultures addressed the theme of feminine power? Cite and describe at least 1 work of art from 3 different cultures or periods studied this semester." So this is for a Hum 1 researched essay. I've looked and haven't found any helpful info yet. A. Most cultures have not addressed the issue. You might have the best luck looking into the ancient Egyptians. Their society allowed a woman to rise and take power. Look at Cleopatra. But it was mostly through a family blood line. The ancient greeks did not allow women to take public office make any real wealth etc. However there were very powerful... more like influencial women in their society, but they mostly all had a powerful man at their side to aid in their activites. (most social activities, never political) And forget about the late middle ages. There were no real powerful women in those ages. Unfortunatly, i suggest looking at specific women in history. Take Joan or Arc for example, or Alexander the Great's mother. Best of… [cont.]

Is it illegal for an employer to open US mail addressed to you but sent to the business address?
Q. Some business-related mail comes to my workplace addressed to me, yet someone has been opening my mail, then placing it in my mailbox with no explanation, no note, nothing to indicate who is doing this or why. Some of the mail is weeks old when I finally do get it. Can an employer legally open mail addressed to a specific person in a company? Once someone had opened my pay stub, which used to be sent to our work addresses but now are sent to our homes. Has anyone ever encountered this? I'm shocked! Do I have any legal recourse against this employer?

How do you stop receiving mail that's addressed to the previous house owners?
Q. We've been living in our home for nearly 3 years now and we still get letters addressed to the previous owners. Most of them are from debt companies. We usually just throw them away. Is there anything i can do other than call these companies and tell them myself (which i don't because the calls are to premium line numbers, i cant afford to pay for something like this) PS i don't know if this is the best place to post but its better than what YA suggested, 'YA mail' Thanks i never thought to send them back :)

A. That's the problem, you're just throwing the mail away. No contact has been made to notify the companies the former owners no longer live there. - Of course they're going to keep corresponding to them at your address. A better idea than calling the companies (you shouldn't have to take on that kind of nuisance), is simply writing "Not at this address!" above their names on the envelope, and put it right back out in your mailbox! - The mail will be returned to the sender and usually stops any further attempts to contact them there.

What do you believe is an art/sport/hobby/other beautiful thing that has yet to be addressed in a novel?
Q. I just need a bit of inspiration. So, what is something that has yet to be addressed or hardly been addressed that you think would be a nice add to a story?

A. It's all been done. But how it's been done is where you can be different. A story, whether it's a novel, short story, or screenplay, is started with some of the following: 1) Premise This is when you ask, "What would happen if?" Anything can get you started with it. The author of "Lord of the Rings" started his when he wrote about a hole in the ground on a piece of paper. He had no clue what it meant, he simply wrote it. Then he started asking "what would happen if..." something lived in it? Then it grew into "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings". Brainstorm, read the news, and start asking what if questions to develop the premise of your story. 2) Setting You can set your story anywhere, [cont.]

Minor caught shoplifting in Spencers, will civil demand be addressed to parents or minor?
Q. It was a very small amount and they were detained but no police involved. Said they would receive civil order/demand in mail asking for a fine. Will the letter be addressed to the parent or child, and will it be confidential or will it be obvious from the outside it is a civil demand? Who will it be addressed from?
Asked by Jessica - Fri Dec 31 02:34:43 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It will be from a legal firm, and addressed to your parents. Do not even think of hiding it from them. If the demand isn't paid, it will go on their credit report, which will hurt them financially in many ways.

My receptionist opened a letter addressed to me and read it to a staff member. Is this legal?
Q. The letter was a complaint about this staff member, and of a confidential nature. My query is whether in a business situation this is covered by law or employment contract. Opening mail is part of her job, but reading mail out to non-addressed people is not.

A. Does she normally open mail as part of her job? If so, it wouldn't be right to fire her for merely opening the mail like she does every day. It is, indeed, illegal to open mail addressed to someone else. But if it was addressed to the company name, or this is something she does every day, I wouldn't think it would be right to use that as an excuse to reprimand her. However, she did use terrible judgement by sharing a confidential communication. Why would she share something so hurtful with someone else? Seems like a pretty mean thing to do. I would definitely sit down and talk to her about it, and would probably write her up for it. The truth is, if you really want her fired you will find some 'legal' way to do it. Any employee… [cont.]

What to do if you get a letter addressed to your home for someone's estate?
Q. My husband and I just bought a new house recently. Today we got a letter in the mail addressed to our home, but to the estate of someone else. I am assuming it's someone who used to live here, but what do we do with it? Do we open it or do we try to contact the previous owners? It's from the IRS and I'm not quite sure what to do with it.

A. this past tax season, I had this exact thing happen to one of my clients. We called the IRS and they said not to open the letter. If you do open the letter and it's not addressed to you, that is a federal offense with fine and/or imprisonment. Since it is from the IRS return the letter back to the IRS to the address shown on the envelope as the return address. You can let them know that the person no longer lives there. I would also, put that letter into another larger letter so it will not get misdirected.

How much would a book addressed to the president Regan be worth?
Q. I recently bought a book/play and the inside it is addressed to president Regan and hand signed by the author. I was just wondering how much that would be worth if I were to sell it
Asked by Starsky - Thu Apr 22 21:49:46 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hopefully you mean Reagan. It would depend on the book/play and who the author is. It also varies with how readily any signatures can be verified. If it's simply "addressed to" him and is relatively unknown, and you can't even confirm it's signed by the original author... Well, anyone can go buy a book/play and forge an author's signature "addressed to" someone else. Anyway, depends on a lot of specifics, none of which are provided in the question.

A. The main issue is Cultural Communication as some cultures are more individualistic such as Americans, British, Australians while others are more collectivist such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean. An example of this issue would be collectivist cultures being more reserved when brainstorming and team working. And so on. Just Google Individualistic Cultures and Collectivist Cultures.

Professors: How do you prefer to be addressed?
Q. I am going into my third year of undergrad and I still haven't figured out which status my professors prefer to be addressed as. Almost all of them have a PhD in something which makes them eligible to be called Dr., but they are obviously also Professors. A. I'm called "Bucky" by most students. Virtually every single professor I know will tell you their name the first day of class. I know of nobody who likes to be called Mr./Ms./Mrs. It tends to be either first names or an earned title. As one of my friends put it, "I spent too many years in school to be 'Mister' in the class-room."

Is there an end-all solution to stop mail from coming in addressed to a deceased family member?
Q. My father recently passed away from cancer. Everytime I see a letter addressed to him, it is a challenge (Three months have past, still receiving letters). Does the post office have a form similar to change of address to use for this purpose? It's very disheartening to call up every single business/indivdiual who sends him a letter.
Asked by nindash - Wed Mar 21 12:56:37 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As stated above, you will need to make some calls. I am also very sorry for your loss. Make sure you contact credit bureaus to let them know that your father is deceased so you don't get credit card offers and such in his name. That will take care of all credit card related offers in general. There are 3 credit bureaus, but that sure beats zillions of creditors.

A. It's called "spoofing", and unfortunately, you can't stop someone from forging your address. Spoofing is the "forgery" of an address, to hide the identity of the sender, and is usually done by an Automatic Spamming system, that blindly and randomly, runs through addresses in sequence. It's not actually coming from or thru your account. (see in your sent folder) One type that's called "Self Spamming"--(go figure)--appears to be coming "from" and going "to" the same address. Anti-spam experts say---There's nothing you can do, except delete them (unopened of course). They are a nuisance, but harmless (as long as you don't click on a link in them)---and "usually" don't last long. If… [cont.]

What do I do with letters sent to my house but addressed to previous residents?
Q. I keep receiving mail addressed to people who lived in my house before me. I have been here for 5 years but I still get them regularly, I have a heap of them and not sure what to do with them. Needless to say, I have no address to forward them to (also, they have the names of at least 4 different individuals!). Does anyone have the same problem? Thanks. x Thank you guys, I will sort them out now :)

A. I used to get all sorts of rubbish here addressed to people who had never even lived here and I used to write "Not known at this address" on them and re-post them until such times as I got so fed up with it all that I then "sat on it" all until I had a carrier bag full of it which I then took round to my local sorting office and told them to shove it where all the rubbish post goes - and suddenly it all stopped being delivered. How's that for a result ! ! !
