Q. Hey i need to make a FTP to transfer some files and am using File Zilla. The part i don't understand is how to make a connection. I don't know what my hostname is or my Port. My computer is wireless connected to the network if that helps. Well i have heard that the hostname is your IP but when i try that it comes up with an error and doesn't connect. Any help? thanks I forgot to add that the other computer is on the same network.

A. i think the port is normally 21, if you're trying to access your computer from outside of your LAN, then you need to setup port forwarding so that your machine is reachable from outside.

If i'm adding a computer to a domain how would IP addressing and hostname work?
Q. Would they be manually assigned? If not how would they do done?
Asked by Sandra - Fri Apr 29 08:36:13 2011 - Computer Networking - 2 Answers - Comments

A. When you have a network the IP address is assigned automatically by the PDC or the primary domain controller. You may also manually configure the IP address range in the PDC and then assign individual IP's for individual computers but this is rarely the case. The best option is to leave DHCP on and set IP address allocation to "obtain automatically from server"

A. You don't, that's up to the database the program is using. Some are more accurate than others. (They look up your IP address and get the location they have listed for that IP address.)

What happens when you ping a hostname?
Q. This is a question I am being told might be asked in an interview. and im not quite sure what to make of it. (googling doesn't really clear it up) im hoping people in the know, can guide me to learning how to answer this properly. thanks!!
Asked by - Sun Aug 28 07:11:27 2011 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Pinging is asking a server for a response to see if it's alive. The name is derived from the 'ping' that submarine SONAR ranging devices use. When you ping a hostname, the hostname is looked up in your DNS and resolved to an IP address. Your computer then sends a ping request to that IP Address. If the device at that address is configured to respond to ping request then it will fire an acknowledgement packet of data back at you saying "here I am, I'm alive".

how can I find more info on a particular computer based on the IP address and hostname?
Q. My firewall's been blocking a lot of stuff from a certain computer but some programs that access the internet haven't been working. I think they might be related but I'm not sure. I need to know how to find out if it's an actual hacker or something related to one of the programs that's not working.

How to find a machine's hostname given its IP address?
Q. I am on freebsd machine and I would like to find the hostname/related information of an ip address - not my machine's hostname though. Any command to use? e.g. 66.228.162.119
Asked by Tata927 - Fri Jan 20 13:51:05 2006 - Computer Networking - 3 Answers - Comments

A. If your freebsd machine is connected to the Internet, you can use the command nslookup . Do "man nslookup" to find out about all the options. Or, you can use the command dig -x which will give you a lot more information. Again, "man dig" should provide help on how to use the various options.

A. Once you do a reverse lookup to determine a host name, you can do a whois to determine who owns that name. This information can be useful when tracking down Spam originators and other purveyors of computer nastiness.

I have just two single-core machines, says A and B, with Win XP SP2. I want to let machine A to be the host of job manager. What should I do? I have no idea about what is "host". Or, how could I make the machine A to be the host and then how could I get the "hostname" ? For details, please see: Example Creating and Modifying User Configurations ... In the Scheduler tab, enter the host name for the machine on which the job manager is running... Dear huippi, I am sorry that your suggestion is just valid for multicore machines... A. I have used parallel computing only very little, but I think that hots means computer that should run the job. You can try to set it to one of these: local localhost 127.0.0.1 But I dont think that you need to use that, try this command: matlabpool local This should make using multiple cores easy Now you could try using parfor command (replace for with parfor). Heres easy to understand tutorial how to use parfor:
